Description

Condition monitoring keeps track of key indicators for machine performance (vibration, temperature etc.) in order to identify any changes which may be indicative of a developing fault. It helps to control machines and systems, identify errors at an early stage and prevent production downtimes. Predictive maintenance is a proactive maintenance process based on permanent monitoring and evaluation of machine and process data.

The Challenge

Machine operators often do not have insights in how their machines are working and how they could improve operational efficiency. Often, the necessary tools to access data from the machines are missing. In some cases, data from different sources should be unified or data in a high frequency (up to 20.000 samples per second) is necessary for a meaningful analysis.

The Solution

Nerve provides a rich set of functions to implement a condition monitoring and predictive maintenance solution. The Nerve IIot platform allows you to read sensor data via fieldbuses (Profinet, EtherCAT, etc.) using the Soft PLC module as well as data from PLCs or other sources (S7, Modbus, OPC UA) using the integrated Data Gateway. The data can then be stored in a local database. Optionally, algorithms can be run on the data using NodeRed or Python based containers created by the Nerve SDK. Furthermore, the integrated Grafana visualization tool can be used to display the data locally and create alarms using rules.

Nerve use case

Why TTTech Industrial

TTTech Industrial offers a range of products that support open and autonomous systems. Nerve is an open edge computing platform that promotes vendor independence and flexibility. Nerve modules enable you to tailor an edge computing solution that best suits your needs. As the solution scales, or the application changes, Nerve modules can be combined to add more functionality.

Nerve can run on Moxa hardware. Its open architecture allows you to deploy your own software, or applications developed by third parties. Software is managed through an intuitive user interface available at the edge or in the cloud. With Nerve, you can reduce system complexity and cost, improve machine performance, and offer new services to customers.

Why Moxa

Moxa provides the reliable hardware for the Nerve IIoT platform. Long term support for hardware and software, certification for industrial / hazardous environments, ability to deliver products to countries around the world and the commitment to make things work across the two partner solutions are key to make IIoT projects easy and fast, as well as suitable for large-scale rollouts, when the PoC/PoV is successful.

Description

Production areas and shop floors grow over time, accumulating a wide range of older hardware and software in the field. “Running systems” are rarely changed, maintaining those systems, however, requires high effort.

The Challenge

Many companies use IPCs to run programs delivered with their machines, for example for monitoring, analysis, and visualization. Each of these solutions can use its own hardware, which causes a high effort for maintaining both the hardware and the solutions. Therefore, customers want to simplify the existing systems.

The Solution

Machine builders and plant operators use multiple Windows- or Linux-based applications from different vendors for their IIoT use cases, e.g., for monitoring, analysis, and visualization.

Nerve consolidates these software parts as virtual machines into one single platform. The x: 1 mapping saves cost by running multiple applications side-by-side on one standard IPC and gives machine builders and plant operators more flexibility when offering or using a range of services with their machines. For example, updates for all the machines can be rolled out using the Management System or remote service features can be used for remote problem solving.

Why Moxa

When multiple virtualized applications move into a single box, it becomes even more important that this box never fails. That’s what Moxa’s design engineers, as well as production and test engineers and supply chain experts are focusing on every day: How can we design and build super-reliable products? What have we learnt and what can we still learn from the very outages in the field? According to our customers those efforts have been successful during the last 30+ years.

Description

To operate machines without interfering with the existing automation, plant operators install an additional infrastructure such as an Add-On PLC for their IIoT use cases. The additional system is independent from the machine automation and offers the plant operator the possibility to acquire additional and further sensor and machine data.

The Challenge

In order to develop new business models or innovative services, more machine and process data is needed. Because of the associated risk or the possibility to lose the warranty, the existing machine control units (PLCs) cannot be used for this purpose. In other cases, existing machine controls do not offer the possibility to access new sensor data. Hence, additional infrastructure is needed.

The Solution

The solution allows plant operators to integrate an Add-On PLC for additional sensor and machine data. It consists of:

  • Moxa hardware
  • Moxa I/Os
  • The CODESYS Soft PLC module integrated in Nerve can be used to run machine control workloads and access fieldbus-level sensors and actuators. The Soft PLC supports multiple fieldbus protocols, such as Ethercat, Modbus or Profinet. Nerve supports a dedicated, high speed network port for the fieldbus connections to CODESYS.
